Nevada, MO is a small town nestled between Kansas City and Joplin with a population of 8,400 people. The town was named by founder, Dewitt Hunter, following his time in Nevada City, CA during the Gold Rush. Nevada is best known as the home of Cottey College, which is a private women's college.

Cottey College is a private women's college in Nevada, Missouri. It was founded by Virginia Alice Stockard in 1884. Since 1927 it has been owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic women's organization based in Des Moines, Iowa.
